WTF: Hill's Pet Nutrition RECALL EXPANSION
Let's get the important stuff out of the way first.
IF you feed your dog ANY product manufactured by Hill's Pet Nutrition, including ANY brand known as:
- Science Diet
- Hills Prescription Diet
Or any brand name marketed by the company Hill's Pet Nutrition, wherever you are in the world.
Then I have this to say to you.
STOP Feeding Your Dog Shit!
Why am I using such direct language?
Some of you may not know me yet, to others:
It should be clear by now that I take Canine Health VERY seriously. I am not the type of guy, nor am I building the type of Company that tip toes around the emotional sensitivities of people. We exist for the dogs.
I won't tell you what you want to hear, I will tell you what you need to hear and if it didn't sink in the first time, then maybe it will this time.
Your Dog Deserves Better!
Back on February 1st, 2019 we reported that Hill's Pet Nutrition were conducting a voluntary recall on 13 canned dog food products across brands owned by Hill's including Science Diet & Hill's Prescription Diet.
Hill's Pet Nutrition Urgent Product Recall
In the nearly 7 weeks that have followed, and after they have now come to the conclusion that the 'ingredient' of concern is also present in other products promoted, marketed and sold by them.
Let me say this again.
It took Hill's Pet Nutrition 7 WEEKS to realise the ingredient that caused the first 'Voluntary Recall' was present in other products not originally recalled.
Dog Food Manufacturing Negligence
There are a number of class action lawsuits that have commenced since the news first broke regarding elevated levels of Vitamin D in Canned Dog Food brands owned by Hill's.
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT NORTHERN DISTRICT OF FLORIDA
or
The number of lawsuits is one thing, but what about the number of dogs affected?
Logic tells me this number is much much higher than anyone thinks at this stage.
The even scarier part to this?
Communication from the Company was through the US Vice President and General Manager of Hill's Pet Nutrition, Jesper Nordengaard who wrote with "severe regret" to advise of the extension and expansion of the original recall.
Personally, I'd prefer your resignation Jesper. The incompetence shown by the Company that you represent means your position and the investigative team that you had working on this is grossly ill-equipped to manage similar situations moving forward.
I don't care much for your possible retort here either. This isn't the first time that Hill's have screwed the pooch (so to say). Not the first, not the second and it won't be the last either. This one is just plain stupidity.
Big Dog Food Doesn't Care
Yes. You heard me. They don't care.
If they did, we wouldn't be here.
It certainly doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to understand the extent of the fuck-up that has occurred here.
Mr. Nordengaard in a letter to Veterinarians stated:
“Following the recall, we conducted a detailed review of our canned dog foods. As we had expected, that review confirmed that the issue is isolated to the same vitamin premix used in canned dog foods and limited to specific production lots,”
He then went on to say:
“However, our review did determine that there were additional products affected by that vitamin premix, and it is for that reason that we are expanding the recall,”
To say that I am gob-smacked, is putting it very, very lightly.
Where To From Here
Well, it's pretty simple really.
I created Rawmate because I didn't trust what these conglomerate Dog Food companies were putting into their food.
In fact, I feel absolutely 100% validated in my dis-trust of Companies like Hills and while many highly intelligent and highly educated people have advocated and petitioned me through the early days of Rawmate to change the model that we have built, some of them might now understand what I have all along.
I've lost some close personal friends over the years, but none hurt more than those I knew before Veterinary School (read: Before Hill's and Mars got involved).
What You Need To Do
Stop feeding your dog shit.
That is all I ask.
I'm not writing this or taking this position to sell more Rawmate.
The harsh truth here is that most people reading this aren't in a position to be able to afford the product that we manufacture. I get that. I can completely understand. Not every one employs a personal chef for their dog, but I am also completely un-apologetic on that front.
Hill's and Rawmate play on a completely separate field in a completely different game. In fact, I don't even count these guys as competition.
Think of it like Polo vs Football -- one is the most played game in the world. The other is reserved for people with taste, intellect and a desire for the finer things in life.
The Fine Print
This is an opinion piece. It represents my personal thoughts, beliefs and musings on this mess as it is reported through varying mainstream news publications.
I won't soften my stance here. There is literally nothing that this Company could say to me that would help me to think differently on this matter.

I'd love to know your thoughts. Do you feed your dog this crap? Have recent events cast doubt on continuing to do so?
